Spotify, the (Western) world's most popular streaming service hardly needs an introduction. The music streaming service is available in 92 countries mainly in Europe, North and South America and has managed to amass more than 299m monthly active users and 138m paying subscribers. Spotify offers an ad-funded semi-interactive streaming service as well as an on-demand subscription streaming service. The service offers a wide variety of playlists, both curated by humans as well as by smart algorithms.

In June 2015 iTunes launched its subscription music streaming service "Apple Music". Apple Music is available in the same territories as the iTunes Store and is currently the most successful subscription streaming service in the US, ahead of Spotify. Aside from its vast catalog, the service offers curated playlists and user-specific listening recommendations to its subscribers. Apple Music allows unlimited on-demand streaming and subscriptions are available from 9.99 USD/EURO/GBP per month in the US, EU, and the UK. Apple does not operate an advertisement-funded streaming service, like for example Deezer or Spotify, which allows users to access music for free.

Tidal is the name of the audio and audiovisual streaming service that
was launched in 2014. The company was acquired by Project
Panther, a year later, a company owned by superstar rapper Jay Z. In
2021 Tidal was acquired by Financial Services company Square.
To distinguish itself from other streaming services, it started to work
with big stars in the music industry like Beyoncé and Kanye West
putting their new music exclusively on Tidal. Also providing its
content in lossless format, as much as possible, is a specific key
characteristic for the service.

TIDAL

France-based Deezer is one of the biggest and most
globally-available streaming services in the world. Deezer was
launched in 2007 and is currently live in over 185 countries and has
approximately 16 million monthly active users, and 7 million paid
subscribers as of February 2020. With 7m paying users and 16m
monthly active users, Deezer seems to have an exceptionally high
paid-freemium ratio. The service is available for Web, Android, iOS,
Windows Mobile, BlackBerry OS, and Windows, MacOS.

Amazon Music

Napster, formerly known as Rhapsody, is one of the most
long-standing streaming services in the world. Rhapsody launched in
2001 as Listen.com. It was the first streaming subscription service
that allowed caching in the US. Napster is available in 34 countries
and is one of the few subscription streaming platforms that is turning
a profit. Napster only offers paid subscription tiers and no freemium
ad-supported tier.
Besides operating its own ‘Napster’ music service, the company also
operates various B2C as well as B2B white labelled versions of its
platform on behalf of third parties (called “Powered by Napster”).
Napster for example operates white labelled services for mobile
providers (BASE, 0@, yourfone etc), car brands (BMW, Audi, Porsche,
Mini, and Bentley) and even supermarkets like Aldi’s life Musik and
Hofer Life music.
